Slide-In, Drop-In or Freestanding Range

Tue Mar 22 2016

We often have customers ask us what the difference is between a slide-in (or drop-in) range and a freestanding range. One thing to understand is that whether you choose freestanding or slide-in, it is available as an induction, electric or gas range. Choosing a slide-in vs. freestanding range will depend on your countertop space, cabinet layout and kitchen design. In this blog, we're comparing the slide-in, drop-in and freestanding ranges to help you make an informed purchase.

    Slide-In Ranges

Slide-in ranges blend in seamlessly with your countertops. They're perfect for those who are looking for a custom or built-in look and do not want to invest in a cooktop and wall oven combination. Slide-in ranges slide into an open space in your cabinetry. They have a lip on the left and right sides of the cooktop that extend past the range itself, allowing the cooktop to sit flush with your counters.

There must be cabinets on either side of a slide-in range, since the side panels are not finished like they are in a freestanding range. The controls for a slide-in range are usually in front of the burners versus behind the burners of a freestanding range. Slide-in ranges usually have a bottom storage drawer or warming drawer just like freestanding ranges do.

    Drop-In Ranges

Drop-in ranges are dropped into a specific cabinet cut out with a cabinet/wood panel at the bottom instead of a storage or warming drawer. They are less common than slide-in or freestanding ranges because of the specific cut out dimensions, the smaller oven capacity, and fewer options for induction or gas. Usually, people are only interested in drop-in ranges when their cabinets already have that specific cut out or they're replacing an existing drop-in range. Most people remove the bottom cabinet and put a slide-in or freestanding range in its place.

    Freestanding Ranges

Freestanding ranges are more economical and common than slide-in and drop-in ranges. It's what most people think of when they think of a stove. A freestanding range can sit anywhere in your kitchen as the sides are finished and it doesn't require cabinet work. Freestanding ranges typically have controls in the back, a storage or warming drawer in the bottom, and a larger oven capacity. They also have more style choices per brand and fuel options.
