Appliances are all about making our lives more convenient. One such appliance that makes a great addition to any kitchen is an ice machine or an ice maker. With so many ice types, brands, sizes and options, it's hard to find the right one for you. In our blog, we've put together a guide to help you make a smart decision!
What is an Ice Machine?
An ice machine/maker is an appliance that essentially makes ice. It's great for people who have big families that keep running out of ice. It is also a great investment for people who constantly host parties, barbecues and other large events.
Types of Ice Machine
Ice machines are usually either freestanding or engineered to fit under a kitchen bar counter as a built-in ice maker. The common colors are black, stainless steel and white. Custom panels are also very common these days. Scotsman 15'' ice machine (SCN60PA-1SU) is built-in and requires a custom panel.
Types of Ice
Ice machines can produce either regular or clear ice. Regular ice machines produce cloudy looking ice because of the impurities and air bubbles trapped in the water. Clear ice machines produce clear quality ice by freezing water at 32 degrees which discards impurities and air bubbles. GE Monogram 15'' ice machine (ZDIS15SSHLH) can produce 50 lbs of clear ice a day.
Shapes of Ice
The ice machines produce various types of ice depending on the brand. The most common types are cube, crescent, nugget, flake and gourmet. Cube ice has 100% ice to water ratio. It is perfect for maximum cooling, slow melt and quick production. Crescent ice is common in bars, beverage dispensers and non-blended drinks. Nugget ice is soft and chewable and commonly used for blended drinks. Flake ice is perfect for food and beverage presentation, preservation and hand scooping for drinks. Gourmet ice is used in fine dining, bars and non-blended drinks such as scotch.
Size & Quantity
The size of the ice machine range from a 15' to 18''. The amount of ice that an ice machine produces and stores depends on the machine. Your decision should be based on how much ice you use daily. A U-Line 15'' ice machine (UBI1215B00A) can produce an impressive 60 lbs of clear ice and can store up to 30 lbs. On the other hand a 15'' Marvel ice machine (25IMBBOR) can produce up to 12 lbs a day and store up to 15 lbs a day.
